Why the Moon landing arrived on television via a sheep paddock in Australia
The pictures of Neil Armstrong stepping onto the Moon reached the world through radio dishes in Australia, because the Moon was below the horizon in the United States for most of the moonwalk. A 26-metre antenna near Canberra carried the first eight and a half minutes; a 64-metre telescope at Parkes, built for radio astronomy rather than spaceflight, carried the remaining two hours and twelve minutes.

A launch pad is a machine, and it gets rebuilt for every rocket that uses it
A pad is not a parking space with a countdown clock; it is a purpose-built machine sized to one specific rocket's plumbing, exhaust, and hold-downs. When a different rocket takes over a pad, the structure is substantially demolished and rebuilt — the same patch of Florida concrete has now served Apollo's Saturn V, the Space Shuttle, and SpaceX's Falcon rockets, and none of them could have used the others' hardware unchanged.

Hubble's mirror was ground to the wrong shape. How do you fix a telescope in orbit?
Hubble's primary mirror was polished to an exquisitely precise version of the wrong curve, because the instrument used to check it during manufacture was itself assembled incorrectly. The fix was not to replace the mirror but to put corrective optics in front of the instruments — spectacles for a telescope — installed by astronauts three and a half years after launch.

America's first space station was wrecked 63 seconds after launch. They fixed it with an umbrella.
Skylab's combined micrometeoroid and thermal shield tore away barely a minute into its launch in May 1973, taking one solar array with it and jamming another, and the unshaded station heated to the point of being uninhabitable. Rather than write it off, engineers designed a sunshade that could be pushed out through a small scientific airlock like a parasol, and the first crew flew up eleven days later and deployed it.

Voyager 1 turned around, photographed the Earth, and then switched its cameras off forever
On 14 February 1990, nearly four billion miles from the Sun and with no scientific target left ahead of it, Voyager 1 pointed its cameras back the way it had come and took a 60-image portrait of the solar system. Earth occupies less than a pixel. Thirty-four minutes after the Earth frames were taken, the cameras were powered off and never used again.

The most powerful engine America ever flew was never rebuilt. Its replacement works nothing like it.
Five F-1 engines lifted the Saturn V, each producing more than 1.5 million pounds of thrust for 7.5 million pounds in total. When America returned to building a heavy rocket, it did not restart F-1 production: the Space Launch System reaches a higher liftoff thrust — 8.8 million pounds — using four smaller, restartable engines and two solid boosters instead.

Europe built its own rocket because a satellite you cannot launch is a satellite you do not control
When the European Space Agency was formed in 1975, one of its first objectives was a European launcher, on a blunt piece of reasoning ESA still states plainly: no launcher means no independent access to space, which means no space programme. Ariane 1 first flew from Kourou on 24 December 1979 — and was the first launch vehicle designed primarily to put commercial satellites into geostationary orbit.

Japan's cargo ship did not dock with the space station. It stopped nearby and waited to be caught.
Japan's KOUNOTORI resupply craft approached the International Space Station and then held station while the robotic arm reached out, grappled it, and berthed it by hand. That capture-and-berth technique became the standard method for arriving at the station — including for the American commercial vehicles that followed.

The Shuttle's heat shield was the one part of the vehicle the crew could not look at
The Space Shuttle was protected by several thousand insulating tiles, most of them shaped to fit one specific place on the airframe and nowhere else. The crew could not see the critical underside from inside, so after Columbia NASA built an inspection regime that looked at the vehicle from every direction it could — ground radar, a high-altitude aircraft filming ascent, cameras in the external tank umbilical well, and spacewalks.

The first men back from the Moon were handed protective suits before they were allowed out of the capsule
Apollo 11's recovery was not a rescue but a containment operation. Navy swimmers stabilised the capsule, a decontamination officer passed protective garments in through the hatch, the crew put them on before emerging, and they went straight into a sealed trailer on the carrier deck — because nobody could yet prove the Moon carried nothing harmful.

One spacecraft design has been carrying people since 1967 — by being modified rather than replaced
Soyuz is the longest-running crewed spacecraft programme in the history of spaceflight, first flying with a crew on 23 April 1967 and still flying today. It survived not by staying the same but by being repeatedly rebuilt inside the same basic shape, carrying crews to Salyut, then Mir, then the International Space Station.

Someone had to decide the Moon was not dangerous. It was a committee, and it took three missions.
Lunar quarantine was not lifted by a discovery but by a decision. An Interagency Committee on Back Contamination, formed in 1966 from NASA, the US Public Health Service, the Department of Agriculture and academia, held the authority; it released the Apollo 11 crew after a 21-day observation period, and in early 1970 concluded that quarantine had become superfluous — while insisting the lunar samples themselves stay contained.
